Tableau – Filter Dimensions

Filter Dimensions means Filtering by categorical values, like regions, or products. These are filters applied to the Dimensions field. Let us apply the Dimension filters on the subcategory of the products.

Let us create a new sheet in the same Amit_Tableau_Filters.twb Tableau Workbook.

Display profit for each sub-category of products according to their shipping mode. We will drag the:

  1. Dimension Ship Mode and Sub-Category to the Rows shelf
  2. Measure Profit to the Columns shelf

Here it is,

1. Create a horizontal bar chart in Tableau

Drag the Dimension Sub-Category to the Filters. This opens the Filter dialog box section:

2. Set a Filter for the Dimension in Tableau

Click on the None button at the bottom of the list to deselect all:

3. Unselect the values in Tableau

After that, select the Exclude option in the bottom right to exclude all the categories:

4. Exclude the values in Tableau

Select the categories to exclude. We will exclude the following four categories, you can exclude any of them to filter:

  • Appliances
  • Chairs
  • Copiers
  • Furnishings

Click Apply and then OK:

5. Filter specific values in Tableau

The four excluding categories will not be visible now. This is how we apply filters on dimensions. We have renamed the sheet as Filter Dimensions:

6. Dimensions filtered in Tableau
