What Is AI Bias

AI bias happens when an AI system treats some people or groups unfairly. It’s like if a teacher only gave good grades to students who wear red shirts—that wouldn’t be fair, right? AI systems can act unfairly too, but not because they’re mean. It’s because they learn from data, and if the data is biased, the AI will be biased too.

How Does AI Bias Happen

AI systems learn from data. For example:

  • If you’re teaching an AI to recognize faces, you’ll show it thousands of pictures of faces.
  • If you’re teaching an AI to recommend movies, you’ll give it data about what movies people like.

But if the data is biased, the AI will learn the bias. Here are some examples:

  1. Facial Recognition Bias:
    If an AI is trained mostly on pictures of light-skinned people, it might not work well for dark-skinned people. This isn’t fair!

Imagine a company using an AI to screen job applications. The AI is trained on data from past hires, but most of those hires were men. The AI might learn to favor men over women, even if the women are just as qualified. This isn’t fair, and it’s bad for the company too—they might miss out on great employees!

How Does This Connect to Computer Vision and Neural Networks

  • Computer Vision: This is about teaching computers to “see” and understand images. If the data used to train a computer vision system is biased (e.g., mostly pictures of one group of people), the system won’t work well for everyone.
    Example: A biased facial recognition system might not recognize people with darker skin tones.
  • Neural Networks: These are the “brains” of AI. They learn patterns from data. If the data is biased, the neural network will learn the wrong patterns and make biased decisions.
