03 Jan n8n Versions: Cloud and Community Edition
To work on n8n, you can either use the n8n hosting solution or self-host it. Let us see the ways to work with n8n, i.e., n8n versions. Here are the following two versions of n8n:
- n8n Cloud Free Trial: No installation; you sign up for an account online. Free for 14 days, then requires a paid subscription
- n8n Community Edition: Requires self-hosting (e.g., via Docker or npm) on your own computer or server.
n8n Cloud is n8n’s hosted solution. It is paid, but comes with a 14-day trial. It provides:
- Zero setup or ongoing maintenance for your n8n
- Around-the-clock uptime monitoring
- Fully managed OAuth authentication
- One-click updates to the latest n8n versions
N8n Cloud vs Community Edition
n8n Cloud offers managed convenience with premium features (AI, collaboration, support) for a fee, while the Community Edition is a powerful, free, self-hosted version with core functionality but requires managing your own infrastructure and lacks some advanced collaborative tools like execution search and global variables, making Cloud ideal for ease-of-use and Community best for control and cost-saving on infrastructure.
n8n Cloud (Paid + n8n’s Hosted)
- Convenience: Fully managed, zero server maintenance, easy setup.
- Features: Includes AI Assistant, collaboration, advanced logging, SSO, and dedicated support.
- Cost: Subscription-based, but predictable costs. Hosted by n8n itself.
- Best For: Users prioritizing ease of use, advanced features, and no management overhead.
n8n Community Edition (Self-Hosted)
- Control: Full control over your environment, data, and security.
- Cost: Free software, but you pay for your own hosting (servers, database). Self-hosted.
- Features: Core automation, unlimited workflows/executions, but lacks some enterprise features like Git integration, log streaming, and advanced collaboration.
- Best For: Users who want maximum control, lower software cost (if they have existing infrastructure), and are comfortable with self-management.
Differences between n8n cloud and community edition
- Management: Cloud is managed; Community requires self-hosting and updates.
- Features: Cloud adds premium features like the AI Assistant and collaboration.
- Cost Structure: Cloud is a subscription; Community is free software with hosting costs.
- Scalability: Cloud scales easily; Community scales based on your chosen infrastructure.
Choose Cloud for simplicity and power-ups, or Community for freedom and control over your stack.
Note: In this course, we will work on the n8n Cloud Free Trial. It’s accessed via a web browser at app.n8n.io. It comes with a 14-day free trial.
