Fahrenheit (°F)

  • Definition: A temperature scale where the freezing point of water is 32°F, and the boiling point is 212°F
  • History: Proposed in 1724 by physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit. He based his scale on the temperature of an ice-water-salt brine (0°F) and his best estimate of human body temperature (96°F, later adjusted to 98°F).
  • Common Uses: Daily weather updates, internal cooking temperatures, and thermostats primarily in the United States and its territories.

Celsius (°C)

  • Definition: A metric scale of temperature where 0°C  is the freezing point of water and 100°C is the boiling point of water at standard atmospheric pressure.
  • History: Invented by Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius in 1742. Interestingly, his original scale had 0 as boiling and 100 as freezing; it was reversed shortly after his death.
  • Common Uses: Everyday weather forecasting, cooking, and scientific research across the vast majority of countries.
